The basics

What is a home retrofit?

A retrofit is a set of upgrades that make an existing home warmer and cheaper to run: insulation, a heat pump, solar panels, better windows and so on. It's work done to the house you already live in, not a rebuild. The aim is lower bills, a more comfortable home, and a better BER (Building Energy Rating, the A-to-G label on every Irish home).

What is a One Stop Shop?

A One Stop Shop is an SEAI-registered company that manages a full home upgrade for you, end to end. Instead of arranging each grant and each trade yourself, we survey the house, plan the work, apply for the grants, carry out the upgrades and have them signed off. You deal with one team and one bill.

What measures do you install?

The main ones are cavity wall insulation, roof and attic insulation, external wall insulation, new windows and doors, solar PV (photovoltaic) panels, and heat pumps. Which of these makes sense depends on your house. We assess the home and include each measure where it's worth doing.

What is an air-to-water heat pump?

An air-to-water heat pump (ASHP, an air source heat pump) runs your heating and hot water off electricity instead of gas or oil. It pulls heat from the outside air, even in cold weather, and uses it to warm the water in your radiators and taps. The outdoor unit sits beside the house and a cylinder goes in the hot-press. It works best in a well-insulated home, which is why we usually pair it with insulation upgrades.

Grants

Do I qualify for SEAI grants?

Most older homes do. As a general rule the house needs to have been built and occupied before 2011, and the work has to bring it up to the standard SEAI sets. The exact grants depend on your house type and what you have done. We confirm what you qualify for during the survey. You can see the current amounts on our Grants page.

The works

Do I have to move out while the work is done?

No. You stay in your home through the works. A retrofit is a series of measured improvements, not a knock-down, so most of it happens around you. There may be a bit of noise and dust on the busier days, but we plan the job to keep disruption down and we leave the place tidy at the end of each day.

How long does a retrofit take?

It depends on how much work the house needs. A single measure like attic or cavity insulation can be a day or two. A deeper upgrade with external wall insulation, a heat pump and solar might run a few weeks on site, plus the planning and grant approvals beforehand. We give you a schedule with your proposal so you know what to expect and when.

What's a BER, and will mine improve?

A BER (Building Energy Rating) is the energy label on your home, from A (best) to G. We take a BER before we start and another once the works are done, so the improvement is measured and on the record. A well-planned retrofit usually moves a home up several grades. You can see real before-and-after ratings in our recent projects.
